Public Mobile $30 Plan 2026 Review: Is It the Best Value Tier?

Review the current Public Mobile $30 plan, what it includes today, how it compares with nearby tiers and who it suits. Verify the live offer before switching.

ArticleUpdated October 2026

The Public Mobile $30 plan is one of the strongest value tiers in the current lineup if you want a meaningful amount of Canada-wide data without paying for a 5G-speed or cross-border plan. Checked on August 7, 2026, Public Mobile lists the $30 plan with 35GB of data at 4G speed, unlimited talk and text, and 2% back in Public Points. The awkward part for the $28 tier is that another $2 currently jumps you from 10GB to 35GB.

That does not make the $30 plan perfect for everyone. Someone who barely uses mobile data can still save money below $30, while a person who wants 5G speed, much more data, or Canada-US-Mexico use should compare the higher tiers. But for ordinary Canadian smartphone use, this is the current sweet spot I would compare first.

What the Public Mobile $30 plan includes today

The official Public Mobile plans page currently lists the $30 Canada-wide plan with:

  • 35GB of monthly data
  • 4G speed
  • unlimited talk and text
  • 2% back in Public Points

The plan is Canada-wide, not one of the Canada-US-Mexico offers. Public Mobile changes its lineup frequently, sometimes within days, so the live plan page should always win over a screenshot, forum post, comparison site, or older review.

That is also why the title of this review keeps the durable $30 price tier instead of baking 35GB into the headline. The price may survive longer than the data allowance.

Why $30 currently looks much better than $28

The most interesting comparison is not $30 versus a giant premium plan. It is $30 versus the plan immediately below it.

Current tier Data Speed tier Best fit
$24 5GB 4G speed Very light mobile-data use
$28 10GB 4G speed Light use with a strict sub-$30 budget
$30 35GB 4G speed Moderate everyday use
$35 50GB 5G speed Heavier use or users who want the 5G-speed tier

At the time of checking, paying $2 more than the $28 plan adds 25GB. That is unusually large for such a small price step. If you use more than 10GB even occasionally, the $30 tier becomes much easier to justify.

The $28 plan review is still worth reading if you know you are a light user. Otherwise, the $30 tier currently gives you far more breathing room.

How much can you realistically do with 35GB?

Thirty-five gigabytes is not unlimited data, but it is enough for many people who use Wi-Fi at home and work while relying on mobile data during the rest of the day.

A 35GB plan can comfortably support a mix of:

  • maps and navigation
  • music streaming
  • social media
  • email and messaging
  • banking and shopping apps
  • occasional video streaming
  • video calls away from Wi-Fi
  • light hotspot use for a laptop or tablet

The biggest data eater is usually video. If you spend hours every day watching high-resolution video over cellular data, 35GB can disappear much faster than someone who mainly streams music and uses maps.

Before switching, check the cellular-data screen on your current phone. If the last few months show 8GB, 11GB and 14GB, the $30 plan gives useful headroom. If you regularly use 50GB or more, it is probably the wrong tier.

Who gets the best value from the $30 tier?

The Public Mobile $30 plan makes the most sense for someone who wants to stop thinking about every gigabyte but does not need a huge data bucket.

Good candidates include:

  • commuters who stream music and use maps daily
  • students who split their time between campus Wi-Fi and mobile data
  • workers who use email, Teams, Slack or browser apps on the go
  • parents who want enough data for normal use without moving into a higher tier
  • people bringing their own phone who want predictable prepaid spending

It is less compelling if your phone spends almost the entire month on Wi-Fi. Saving $6 by choosing the $24 tier is still saving money, even if the $30 plan wins the data-per-dollar contest.

What you give up by staying at $30

The $30 tier currently sits below Public Mobile’s 5G-speed plans. The next Canada-wide option is $35 for 50GB at 5G speed.

That extra $5 buys 15GB more data and moves you into the 5G-speed tier. Whether that matters depends on what you do with your phone. Everyday browsing, social media, navigation and music do not suddenly become useless at 4G speed. People moving large files, tethering more often or simply wanting the faster advertised tier may prefer $35.

There is also a separate $35 Canada-US-Mexico limited-time plan with 25GB when checked. That plan gives less data than the Canada-wide $35 option but adds cross-border geography and 1,000 international minutes.

If travel is more important than raw Canada data, the higher tier may solve a different problem entirely.

The $30 plan is not a Canada-US-Mexico plan

This point is easy to miss when several Public Mobile plans sit close together in price. The current $30 plan is labelled Canada-wide.

If you regularly visit the United States or Mexico and want your regular mobile plan to work across all three countries, compare the current cross-border plans instead. Public Mobile’s coverage page explains the Canada-US-Mexico option as one plan designed for use across those countries.

Do not choose the $30 plan expecting U.S. and Mexico use simply because another nearby Public Mobile tier includes it.

Public Points improve the math a little

The live $30 plan card advertises 2% back in Public Points. Public Mobile’s rewards page says points can be earned through payments, anniversaries, referrals and Community participation, then redeemed toward monthly charges, add-ons and other eligible rewards.

Rewards are useful, but they should not rescue the wrong plan. Choose the right amount of service first. Let the points be the bonus.

Existing customers should check My Account before changing

Public plan pages show the public lineup. Existing subscribers can sometimes see account-specific offers or different options after signing in.

Before changing an existing subscription:

  • compare your current plan with the public $30 card
  • check whether your current plan has a benefit you would lose
  • review the effective date of the change
  • save a screenshot of the new plan details

Do not switch just because 35GB sounds impressive. A grandfathered plan can still be better for your personal use.

Public Mobile $30 plan pros and cons

Pros:

  • 35GB is a substantial jump over the current $28 tier
  • unlimited talk and text
  • prepaid structure with no conventional overage bill surprises
  • 2% back in Public Points
  • good fit for moderate everyday use

Cons:

  • 4G-speed tier rather than the current 5G-speed tier
  • Canada-wide rather than Canada-US-Mexico
  • online-first support may not suit everyone
  • heavy video and hotspot users can still burn through 35GB

Is the Public Mobile $30 plan the best value tier?

For many Canada-only users, yes, at least in the August 7, 2026 lineup. The biggest reason is the gap between $28 and $30. Two extra dollars currently buys 25GB more data, while moving from $30 to $35 gets another 15GB plus the 5G-speed tier.

If your normal usage is somewhere around 10GB to 30GB, $30 is the first tier I would compare. If you are always below 5GB, save money. If you are often above 35GB, move up instead of rationing data every month.

You can compare the full set of current Public Mobile plans before deciding.

Look at the yearly difference, not only the monthly price

A $2 monthly difference between $28 and $30 is $24 over a full year if both prices stay unchanged. For someone who regularly needs more than 10GB, paying roughly the price of one casual lunch over a year for an extra 25GB each month can be sensible.

The same logic works in reverse. If you never use more than 4GB, the $24 tier could save $72 a year compared with $30. Data value only matters when the data is useful to you.
